Do you need extra emotional support for your child?
All parents want the best for their children. In spite of this, you or your child may sometimes experience stressful situations, for example trauma, adapting to new circumstances, or loss.
Intervention
Children then need extra emotional support to work through their emotions. A change in your child’s behaviour will be an indication that he or she needs extra help.Children may either display heightened energy levels and start misbehaving, or they may have less energy, become reserved and try to withdraw from social interaction. In both these cases, help is available for your child.
Marie-Louise van Heerden is a social worker (B.SW) with a master’s degree in play-based intervention (M.SW)
Method
I use Gestalt play-therapy techniques to enable children to become more aware of themselves, their environment and the situation in which they find themselves.
This empowers them to take responsibility for their behaviour, and to adapt this behaviour accordingly.
Children are given the opportunity to express themselves and to communicate, by depicting their thoughts, wishes, dreams and fears by using mediums such as clay, paint and sand. The process is supported and facilitated by play.
There is also a strong focus on the child’s emotional intelligence.
